1. Prepare to be Inspired

Inspiration is nice, but that doesn’t mean you should sit around all day waiting for ideas to come to you. Instead, cultivate smart creative habits that help you find ideas faster and master the creative process. Turning up every day sends a signal to your subconscious that you’re dedicated to the virgin canvas, the blank page or your medium of choice.

2. Trace Your Creative Roots

To know what you’re going to create (and to overcome problems like procrastination, fear and self-doubt), you must understand what drives you. You must understand what you’re passionate about and for that, a personal mission statement is key.

3. Learn What Your Craft (And Your Audience) Demands

To master your craft, whether it’s writing, painting, music, film or art, requires learning what both it and your audience expects. So, unless you’re happy to create alone and in obscurity, trace the connection between what your audience wants and what you’ve created.

4. Find a Creative Master to Mentor You

A mentor will help you face your fears, master the self and find better ideas faster. By going from one creative mentor to the next, you will combine the teachings of multiple experts with your unique ideas and creative voice.

5. Strengthen Your Mind and Body

Masters of the creative process understand the value of meditation, physical exercise and protecting their best self. They know becoming more creative isn’t just a mental practice. You can focus on achieving small personal victories, overcoming minor setbacks and slowly progressing towards your goal.

6. Invest in Your Side-Projects

When you need when you need a break from your main gig, turn towards a side-project. That’s what smart creative people do, and they often find real success in this approach. Think of your side-project as a long-term investment: Although it may not pay out today or tomorrow, you could reap rewards down the road.

7. Go to War Against Your Fears

Your fear of failure, your fear of rejection, your fear of criticism, let’s change that. What you must never do is quit on a big idea because it’s more elusive than you thought. So create, don’t hold back, and press publish. Because each idea you fire is an arrow into the belly of the beast.

Are You Ready to Maser the Creative Process?

The Power of Creativity (book 1)

Despite what others say, you don’t need an abundance of natural talent to master the creative process, you just to apply smart, focused strategies.

I cover seven of these creative strategies in my new book The Power of Creativity. In this book (the first of a three-part series), I use real-world science, personal stories and tales from the lives of creative masters like Steve Jobs, Twlya Tharp and Ernest Hemingway.

So post, pin and share this infographic about the creative process, and then go out and create something that shines.
